Episode 94 “Jared Larsen: OnX Hunt”
Today, AB3 sits down with Jared Larsen of OnX Hunt to discuss a wide variety of topics, from the magic of TechnoHUNT, to the unique hunting culture of Wisconsin, to hard truths regarding how to sharpen your skills as a hunter, to how the OnX Hunt app is the best tool available to the beginning hunter.
Episode Highlights
- How TechnoHunt can help elevate your skills
- Bow versus rifle hunting
- Achieving mastery as a hunter by doing your time in the woodsand failing fast
- Why waterfowlers are a completely different breed of hunter
- Jared’s favorite features on the OnX Hunt app
- The benefits of OnX’s Offroad app
3 Key Points
- When you pick up a bow to go archery hunting, accept the fact that something, sometime is going to go wrong. No hunter in their right mind enjoys maiming an animal or watching it suffer, but no amount of training will completely eliminate the chances of you taking the wrong shot at some point in your hunting career.
- The “last frontier” of being a hunter is actually taking the shot. Before getting to that point, you have to build up the skills and the woodsmanship you need to be able to find your animals in the first place. AB3 notes that “even trail cameras only tell a quarter of the story.” Nothing is guaranteed; not even if you do food plotting or set bait. Reading books and surfing hunting forums all day ain’t going to cut it. You need to do your time in the woodsand fail fastto sharpen your skills and increase your affinity with the natural environment around you.
- If you’re looking to explore the OnX Hunt app, consider these highly praised features by OnX Hunt marketing specialist Jared: the ability to share waypointsto fellow hunters who are looking to enter your neck of the woods at different points in time; as well as the tracker featureto mark trees and make sure that, when heading to your stand, your entrance and exit strategies are on point. There is no better tool for the beginning hunter to understand where they can legally hunt and recreate outdoors than the Hunt app. “It takes the uncomfortability out of hunting,” notes Jared.
Three Powerful Quotes
- Don’t think about where that arrow is going to enter; think about where that arrow is going to exit. ~Jared
- There is no game of chasing your tail more than hunting. ~Jared
- If I’m a critter, I want to get shot by a human, because that is going to be the most humane way for me to go. Between starving to death, getting ripped apart by coyotes, freezing to death, and getting hit by a well-aimed arrow—give me the arrow any time of the day. ~Jared

Lisa Ballard and AB3 Cracks His Foot
Monday Oct 19, 2020
Monday Oct 19, 2020
Today, AB3 sits down with Lisa Ballard, writer, photographer, Emmy Award-winning TV producer and host, filmmaker, coach, product consultant, champion skier, and avid outdoorswoman. AB3 also talks about his recent SNAFU involving a broken foot and how he is currently coping.
Episode Highlights
- How a deep love for the outdoors since her youth influenced everything in Lisa’s multidimensional life and career
- What it’s like to be a professional skier for over three decades
- Why professional athletes tend to gravitate toward hunting
- The challenges of big game hunting versus upland hunting
3 Key Points
- One of the great rewards of hunting, beyond the kill itself, is the physical, mental, and emotional growth that comes out of every hunt. Comparing it to professional skiing, Lisa puts particular emphasis on failed attempts on the slope and on the trail, saying that each failure presents a teachable moment and an opportunity to become better in the next attempt.
- Consider hunting on horseback. It adds a completely new dimension to this amazing outdoor experience, not to mention the convenience you’ll have by being able to stow your kills on your horse—a huge help for big game hunting in particular.
- If you want to make a living doing what you love, go for it. Some people unfortunately believe that if you’re having too much fun and have too much passion for what you do, then you’re not really working. Lisa proves that this isn’t true. To get to where she is today, Lisa had to employ tremendous amounts of focus, discipline, and sacrifice over the decades. She absolutely loves what she does as an outdoorswoman, but she had to put in the sweat equity to make it into a real career.
Three Powerful Quotes
- Whenever I go outside, it’s the journey as much as the goal that’s really important. ~Lisa
- I really enjoy hunting for that moment where it’s full concentration, yet you can’t be tight. You’ve got to be loose and lucid enough to be skilful. It’s all about balance. I think hunting is really similar to skiing in that sense. ~Lisa
- If you love what you do, it almost doesn’t seem like work because you’re in a place where you want to be. If you’re trying to be successful, you’re working. It’s not just handed to you on a silver platter. ~AB3

Hunting Gadgets

Episode 92: "Hunting Gadgets"
Now more than ever, there are a ton of bow hunting gadgets available on the market. While AB3 tells us that he’s all about staying cutting edge, by the same token, he’s a firm believer in packing light. Today, he talks about the two gadgets that he never leaves home and goes into the woods without.
Episode Highlights
- Finding a system that works for you
- The many benefits of bringing your phone with you in the woods
- How rangefinders save you time during hunting season
- Gadgetsversus equipment
Two Essential Gadgets to Bring on Your Hunt
- Cellphone. Besides the obvious benefit of being able to stay in touch with the rest of the world, particularly in the case of an emergency, having a cellphone with you in the woods also allows you to check useful tools such as a compass and flashlight, and apps for deer forecasting, weather, and mapping (AB3 personally uses the onX Hunt App).
- Rangefinder. Traditional bowhunters tend to do without one; but AB3 prefers the accuracy of a good rangefinder, and to him, it’s a lifesaver. Deer, after all, are particularly unpredictable animals. AB3 ranges areas, and as long as a deer shows up within range of that area, his bow will be ready.
Three Powerful Quotes
- I like the latest and greatest. I like things that are going to make doing things easier. But, I’m also a firm believer in packing light.
- There’s room for everything and everybody. You can do things your own way. No one person is an expert. At the end of the day, you have to find what works for you, what system you’re comfortable with, what gadgets you want to take along.
- For those of you who don’t use gadgets, more power to you. I applaud and appreciate the fact that you have that level of skill. I don’t have that level of skill yet, so I’m going to use gadgets that will help me be successful.

Josh Crumpton: The Sporting Diversity Road Tour

Episode 91
Josh Crumpton: The Sporting Diversity Road Tour
AB3 once again welcomes Josh Crumpton, founder of Spoke Hollow Outfitters. Following the death of George Floyd and amid the issue of racism that America was then forced to contend with, Josh and a friend had the idea to sponsor a road trip to “lead by example” in promoting diversity across America. 30 participants and 20 sponsors (and counting) later, the Sporting Diversity Road Tour 2020 is underway.
Listen in as AB3 and Josh discuss how he intends to “make noise” through the Sporting Diversity Road trip in order to promote diversity, inclusion, and conservation while celebrating all that the outdoors has to offer.
Episode Highlights
- Josh’s itinerary for the Sporting Diversity Road Tour
- A primer on camping on Bureau of Land Management (public) land
- Discussing diversity on the trail and how the Sporting Diversity Tour came to be
- What first-time fly fishers need to know before starting
Three Key Points
- It has taken a horrible incident that is George Floyd’s death to ignite the much-needed conversation around racism in America; but it doesn’t take much for individuals to do their part in addressing this issue. The idea for the Sporting Diversity Tour was planted during a conversation with a friend over beers following Blackout Tuesday, and this idea eventually snowballed into the official, exciting initiative that is taking place today.
- The best teachers are not necessarily the best at their craft (and vice versa). But that doesn’t matter. An instructor’s job is to guide and inspire others to become the best they can be in what they’re teaching them to do.
- When the traditional marketing machine targets a specific demographic for decades, it naturally leads to the exclusion of others who don’t look like that target market. For the diverse population, hunting in America has always been presented as a white man’s activity. To give more people of both genders and all racial backgrounds the confidence to take part in this world, the diverse community as a whole must get together and have these important conversations which, eventually, will overpower the mainstream message.
Three Powerful Quotes
- We’re looking for sponsors, not to write us checks, because we’re going to do this trip anyway. We’re looking for sponsors to help us amplify our voices and spread our message.
- The guides in the world are not necessarily the best. What they are is the best at teaching other people to do it.
- This road trip isn’t about catching the biggest fish or being the best fly fisher or having the heaviest bag at the end of the day. This is a journey about inspiration. I hope people are inspired to know that no matter what you look like or where you come from or how much money you have, there is a way to figure out how to get out here and do this.
